SmallER paintings rooted in the
landscape surrounding the studio.

The Open Studio Series began with the wildflowers I encounter on daily walks through the Cotswold landscape—and with the old lime-plastered walls, weathered stone and quiet domestic surfaces that give this part of England its particular atmosphere.

Smaller and more intimate than the Atelier paintings, each work allows a single flower or fleeting encounter to hold the room. They are not hurried studies, but concentrated acts of looking: paintings made slowly, with the same attention to light, surface and detail as the larger works.

The first paintings explore wildflowers emerging from aged plaster—snowdrops, primroses, violets, bluebells and other quiet forms that might easily be passed by. They belong to my growing fascination with the mystery held inside ordinary places and objects, and to the hope that looking closely at one small thing might encourage us to notice our own surroundings differently.

Their scale allows them to live easily and quietly within a home, while retaining the presence and intensity of the larger paintings.
